The region's largest community is Fort McMurray. Wood Buffalo is best known as home to the Athabasca Oil Sands. First elected as mayor in 2004, Blake was re-elected to her fourth term as mayor in the municipal election of October 2013, with over two-thirds of the vote. Blake served two terms as a municipal councillor, beginning in 1998, prior to running for mayor in 2004. She is of Métis background, and is originally from Quebec.
